SECRETS & LIES: Kathryn De Marco and Linwood Hart

Wine and cheese reception from 5 to 8 with the artists.

Deliberately provocative, the show’s title “Secrets & Lies” means something different to each artist. For DeMarco, who uses cut paper and paint to build up her collages over charcoal originals, the very materials used—text, photographs, found materials--can either enhance the ultimate meaning of the piece, or ironically contradict it. Many of images are self-portraits, nude or clothed; animals feature prominently, and often the scissors so essential to her work. The scissors themselves might suggest benign feminine craftwork—or weapons. Each piece, built up over countless hours with multiple layers, reward viewers who take the time to scrutinize the details.

DeMarco designed the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival 10th anniversary print, and has shown extensively in the Triangle. She is well known for her commissioned work.

Hart’s heavily textured paintings often incorporate found objects, and reveal the aggressive way he approaches the canvas, scraping, scarring and even melting the paint. Hart says “in life and in the way I paint, I am constantly covering up and burying things beneath layers and layers, until I have smoothed over the lies and secrets I have told myself.” While much of the work is abstract, the North Carolina landscape also features prominently. Hart lives in Durham, and still maintains the family farm in Oxford, where he often paints.
