Scenes of Long Aquaintance
For a few years now, MJ Sharp has been photographing at night with her 4x5 and 8x10 format film cameras. She’s trekked from central North Carolina to Monument Valley and back again. This time, her work reveals scenes closer to home, but no less extreme in their production. The format is still large, and the exposure duration still averages 20 minutes to 2 hours, but this time, the subject is what’s in the kitchen sink, or what happened to a red pepper left on the countertop for a few weeks. Rather than science experiments, these photographs more resemble domestic, interior “landscapes” of color, detail, and form.
