Hands & Faces: Paintings & Collage by Trey Moore
"The beginnings of this body of work can be traced to an initial sketch of the king of hearts nine years ago. However, the idea lay dormant until 2005 and only recently has the series been completed.
On one level a deck of cards is representative of yearly cycles. There are 52 cards in a deck, one for each week of the year. Each suit has 13 cards symbolizing the lunar months. The colors of the cards, red and black, can be said to stand for the two major divisions of the year while there are four suits, symbolic of each season of the year. Another theme that can be found throughout the series is one of relationships. Relationships between life and death as represented by the hearts and spades. Relationships between men and women symbolized by the pairing of face cards and number cards.
This is perhaps the most personal body of work I have
created. Most of the metaphorical and symbolic ideas about the collages I choose to keep private and indeed may only be accessible to my subconscious. While the initial idea has some specific intent, the act of creating each piece takes on a life of its own."
Trey is an NC State School of Design graduate (1991) and lives in Wilmington, NC.
